Jan specializes in the treatment of children and families. As a result of her extensive work with families who have children with high-risk behaviors, Jan firmly believes that family interactions play a key role in either protecting children from negative influences, or contributing to a child’s behavioral problems. In therapy with families, her goals are to help parents strengthen their parental role and parenting strategies, improve communication, and support the whole family in cooperatively finding solutions to problematic behaviors.

When working with younger children, Jan uses play therapies, such as sand tray, puppets, and story telling as natural avenues for a child to explore their feelings, emotions, or experiences in the therapeutic setting. She has specialized training in Brief Strategic Family Therapy, Enriched Structural Family Therapy, sand tray therapy, “1, 2, 3 Magic”, and interventions for trauma, abuse/neglect, adolescent suicide/self injury, and attachment disorders. She has over twenty years of experience working with the military community and multicultural communities.

Jan received her Masters degree in Social Work from New Mexico State University. In addition to her private practice in Frederick County, Jan works at Carroll County Youth Service Bureau, Inc. as an In Home Family Preservation Therapist and a member of the school age suicide and self-injury assessment team.
